The Stability of Our Times

I hope I’m not one of those old farts that starts every sentence with, “Well, back in my day….” Believe me, our country had plenty of problems when I was younger. But in the past few years, the craziness of our times seems to have escalated to a whole new level of craziness. Today, we are asking questions like….

• Will I get fired if I don’t wear a mask at work?

• Should a transgender athlete (born male) compete as a female in sports?

• Should we defund the police to improve race relations?

• Do parents have rights over their own children?

• Is Big Tech stomping on civil liberties?

Such questions would have been inconceivable a decade ago. That’s why I was greatly comforted reading this verse:

Isaiah 33:6

“And he [the LORD] will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is Zion’s treasure.”

God is the stability of our times. Isn’t it a comfort to know that God does not change (Mal. 3:6)? The lunacy of our times may escalate, but God remains constant. Social conditions may deteriorate, but God is steadfast. He is 100% reliable, day in and day out. You could say, God is the very definition of stability.

It’s also a comfort to know that God’s Word is reliable. Men’s words, their political promises, change daily, depending on how the voting winds are blowing. But God’s promises do not change. His Word remains forever.

1 Peter 1:24-25 24

24 for "All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls,

25 but the word of the Lord remains forever." And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

In tumultuous times like these, we can find peace and comfort in knowing that GOD is the stability of our times.
